I fully intended to keep going further on the second image, especially given that I chose to do the one-point perspective with microns and wanted to attempt the other image with pencils. However, I became very frustrated after I had filled my top area and was trying to figure out how to format the other areas in the image. I'm going to end up completely redoing the 2-point perspective, but this is what I managed.
Process Notes: In our house, we actually got rid of our table and chairs due to both their wear and tear, as well as the size of our small kitchen. As such, I used my desk chair and it's angles to work on this assignment. Also, the painter's tape was used as a way to anchor several items into place and play no part in the actual work. Finally, I decided to use my pencils for this project and used 2B, 3B, and 4B. Materials Used: 1 clothes Hanger, 2 shower rings, 1 frothing mug (which contained a palette knife and a screwdriver), 1 small box containing jewelry stones, 1 wireless mouse, 1 Little People police officer, 1 Little People three tier cake, 1 large decorative clothespin, 1 box of scent warmer blocks. I noticed after checkking my photos that I failed to take a snapshot of after I moved the hanger to the top of canvas, as the canvas was only intended to create a flat base for me to use. I think this is more clear in the second image which also shows my use of painters tape to keep the hanger as straight as possible (along with the shower rings)
I find self-critique to be interesting as not only are you required to focus attention on what you’ve created out of your work, but I think it also creates a space where you’re forced to consider whether you’re being too critical on one thing, or not critical enough on another. Furthermore, it requires you to focus on elements of a work that you may not initially consider as something that needs to be considered in critiquing. For instance, I would not have considered the effort and perseverance that I put into creating these drawings as something someone might consider in the work. However, I can easily recall, as stated in my comments, that I struggled briefly with how to handle the lid of the Starbucks cup due to the raised lip, as well as trying to be accurate in my shapes of the soda cans and their placement in line with one another.
On the other hand, I know something I struggled with for myself was the logic of initial sketches and idealizing something before actually working on it. I realize this is another segment of perfectionism and believing it has to be perfect the first time, but it also lends itself to gaining knowledge. In having to do this self-critique, referring to that point definitely made me think about needing to not just plan out sketches and drawings in my head, but also on paper, even if it’s just scribbles. All in all though, I feel like doing this helped me have a different way of appreciating my own work and where I’m starting versus where I hope to end up with it. My perfectionism struggled so hard with these, but I'm going to keep doing them anyway! Didn't realize until after I'd finished that I'd done front, back, and bottom. The meaningful object is a jewelry box my paternal grandma gave me after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. the damage was caused by my mom knocking it on the floor earlier this year.
Preferred Name: Mel or Melanie
Major: My current major is in psychology with a minor in studio art. What are you most excited to learn: Um, EVERYTHING. I have wanted to take art classes for years and high school was a mess that left art out of the equation in school. Due to that, I'm here for all of the art knowledge now. Most meaningful art moment: My favorite musician, whom I've been listening to since 2006/07, released a comic book in 2017 that she drew and wrote entirely herself. As someone who appreciates literature and art, seeing her take on a new medium and also being able to hold it in my own hands means a great deal to me. Preferred form of communication: I'm okay with typing or speaking, though I will admit typing eliminates my numerous "um's" and "and's". |
